Imagine being pregnant and having to ride with family in tow on a bus for miles if not hours to get to the only available hospital and then do the return journey again that night only to have to repeat this all the next day and possibly for many days all just to get the necessary treatment you need.  Then imagine your joy at hearing that Rotarians from another country want to help by supporting the refurbishment of an available, but burnt out, building on hospital grounds so that there was a place you could stay in while you receive your medical care. YOU and clubs can easily help ...

Waiyevo Hospital is a small wooden basic general hospital with 32 beds and 5 wards. The hospital is run by a 2-doctor team with surgeons and other medical specialists visiting the hospitals from time to time. Serious cases where advanced medical treatment is required, patients are airlifted to the nearest main hospital in the island of Fiji.

Ground work for the refurbishment at the Waiyevo Hospital has started with trusses being build offsite and timber have been ordered and ready for shipment next month when funds are available. The building will be water blasted by team managed by Geoffrey Amos, Rotary Club of Taveuni.

To help raise the funds needed for the refurbishment St Johns Rotary is holding one of its well-renowned Trivia Evenings.

The funds raised will be targeted for the refurbishment that will create a 5-bedroom unit for expectant mothers and family that would otherwise have to endure long bumpy roads to the island’s only hospital.

The building will also be used for visiting doctors and surgeons supporting the Taveuni Eye Project and other health programs.

You are invited to the Trivial evening but if you cannot make it and would like to support this work please contact the club.
